Stop, Drop & Referral - Join Us at Church!

Sister Thomas inviting others to church on Social Media

Missionaries used to spend much of their time knocking on doors, inviting people to learn about the hope and peace that come through Jesus Christ. While door knocking still happens, technology has opened some new doors which people are now knocking on to find us.

The Church places advertisements on social media that share simple messages about the Savior. Those who want to learn more can click a link and request a visit from the missionaries. When they submit their name, phone number, and address, that information is sent to the missionaries in their area. We call that a referral.

In our mission, we have a saying: “Stop, Drop, & Referral.” When a referral comes in, missionaries should stop what they are doing, drop everything else, and make contact as quickly as possible. Most people who request information are looking for answers right away.

Our mission receives about 200 referrals each week. About 30% of those referrals want to learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ, and so far, this year 22% of our baptisms have come from referrals.

The Church creates advertisements, and our mission does too. We have two websites—Come Unto Christ in NorCal, one in English and one in Spanish. Our technology sisters create fun and engaging ads featuring our missionaries. These are posted on our websites and social media pages, and some we share with the Church for wider use.

Sisters Mitchell & Griffin our “Tech Sisters”

Right now, Sister Mitchell and Sister Griffin serve as our technology sisters. They do an excellent job creating creative content and keeping our Facebook page active and engaging.

I had to laugh when one of our ads featured sister missionaries, but the referral was assigned to two elders. When they arrived to teach about the Savior, the person looked disappointed and said, “You’re not the sisters from the ad!” Oh well, most of the referrals really do want to learn more about Jesus Christ and many are looking for a church to attend. Sunday evenings I always enjoy R&R’s with our AP’s. They introduced me to the “Tim Tam Slam” and here we are getting ready to enjoy the treat. If you like chocolate like I do you, you’ll love this and have to ask the AP’s about it.

And now, drum roll please 🥁 🥁🥁the big 5-0…. 50th journal prompt. Two more to go!

We spent a lot of time this week going through the mission home, organizing things, running to Good Will and getting it all ready to pack! It is getting real.

Mission home

We have a wonderful week ahead of us with transfer planning, An Elder’s Conference, the big Tabernacle Choir Watch Parties, and saying our last good-byes. I told the missionaries it is really Tot Ziens and not good-bye. This is our family’s Dutch way of saying - Until we meet again.

Thanks again for reading my weekly update and letter home. I am down to just a few more blog posts.
