Learn, Love, and Serve

Learn, Love, and Serve

President Quinn’s Weekly Message

I was blessed to attend an Area Instruction Meeting (AIM) this last Saturday in Los Angeles. An AIM is an annual meeting presided over by an Apostle and held with Area priesthood key holders (i.e. stake presidents, temple presidents, and mission presidents). Elder Rasband presided at the AIM this weekend. He taught us and answered questions for four hours. He was joined by Elder Palmer of the Presidency of the Seventy and members of our Area Presidency. I enjoyed the opportunity of being taught by an Apostle of Jesus Christ.

Elder Rasband said something I would like to share with you:

“When you learn of Jesus Christ, you come to love Him. When you love Jesus Christ, you have a desire to serve Him.”

Learn, Love, and Serve Jesus Christ – I love this simple and true lesson taught by Elder Rasband. This lesson is also taught to us in PMG:

“As your understanding and testimony of the Savior and His Atonement grow, your desire to share the gospel will increase.” (page 2)

We see this pattern of learn, love, and serve taught repeatedly in the scriptures. One of my favorites examples is found in the Gospel of John. Several of the Savior’s followers became offended by His teachings. They choose to leave the Him. After their departure, the Savior asked His apostles:

“Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” (John 6:67-69

Peter could bear this testimony of the Jesus Christ because he learned from the words and example of the Savior each day. This learning developed a deep love for the Savior in Peter’s heart (“Lord, thou knowest that I love thee” – John21:15). This love for the Savior led Peter to dedicate his life in the service of Jesus Christ as a disciple and Apostle.

What other examples of this pattern – learn, love, and serve do you see in the scriptures?

In my recently completed round of interviews, I have sensed fatigue creeping into CASRM. This is understandable. We have just completed a miraculous year of missionary work. You have established new standards for CASRM in your service – increasing many of our key indicators for conversion by 200%-400% from the previous year. I know the beginning of this new year can feel daunting with the challenge to maintain and improve upon our new standards and high expectations.

I believe CASRM can use an infusion of “spiritual adrenaline.” To help us continue our momentum of the last year, I extend the following two invitations to help us learn, love, and serve the Savior:

1)    Read the four Gospels in the New Testament between now and Easter Sunday. As you read the Gospels, pray that you might come to know the Savior in a deeper and more personal way by reading the eyewitness accounts of His life and ministry. If you begin tomorrow, you need only read three pages a day to easily complete reading the four Gospels by Easter Sunday.

2)    Continue reading, studying, and pondering the Book of Mormon each day. There is no better source for learning of the Savior and understanding His divine appointment as your Savior and Redeemer.

In our next two interviews, I will ask you to share with me something new you have learned about the Savior by accepting and acting on these two invitations.

I testify that this pattern of learn, love, and serve will grow your discipleship to Jesus Christ. I know that as you make the effort to learn about Jesus Christ, applying your heart to feel the witness of the Holy Ghost during your studies, you will come to love Him. I know that as your love for the Savior grows, you desire to serve Him will be boundless.

Love,

President Quinn
