The Battle is the Lord’s

My Book of Mormon and Come Follow Me studies this week have been in the Book of Alma and in 1 Samuel. I am grateful for the scriptures and the inspiring lessons they teach us. My studies this week have reminded me of the blessings, power, and promises available to us from trusting in the Lord through our obedience to His commandments.
I begin with Alma’s instruction to his son Helaman:
“But if ye keep the commandments of God, and do with these things which are sacred according to that which the Lord doth command you, (for you must appeal unto the Lord for all things whatsoever ye must do with them) behold, no power of earth or hell can take them from you, for God is powerful to the fulfilling of all his words. For he will fulfil all his promises which he shall make unto you, for he has fulfilled his promises which he has made unto our fathers. (Alma 37:16-17)
I am grateful for the promise Alma gives us that, “God is powerful to the fulfilling of all His words.” Despite the setbacks and challenges life – and missionary work present to us, we can trust that the Lord has the power to sustain and strengthen us. We have each been called and set apart, like Helaman was, for this this sacred work of sharing the gospel. I know the Lord will not abandon us in this important work.
The scriptures are full of examples that confirm the truth that with God all things are possible. In 1 Samuel, we read the account of David fighting the Philistine Goliath. David, though a young boy with no training in warfare, stands up against the nearly 10’ tall, seasoned soldier Goliath. Goliath is wearing nearly 250 pounds of armor; David wears no armor. Goliath is armed with a sword and shield; David holds a sling and five smooth stones. Despite these differences, David stands courageously before the giant Goliath declaring his trust in the power of God:
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. … And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.” (1 Samuel 1745-47)
Later in this chapter, we read how David slays the mighty Goliath with a stone hurled from his sling. We can all find courage and faith in the testimony David bears that the “battle is the Lord’s” and that with His assistance we will not fail. Please see yourselves in a battle for the souls you have been called to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with. Armed with the power and strength of the Lord, there is nothing in your missionary purpose you cannot accomplish.
Like Alma and David teach us, we must trust in the power available to us from the Lord in His work. I share with you one more scripture from the instruction of Alma to Helaman:
“…for I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day.” (Alma 36:3)
What a beautiful promise! I testify we can find great comfort knowing that the Lord will support us in all our troubles and afflictions – and if we trust the Lord, the day will come when will be “lifted up” above our trials. I know this to be true.
I testify we are engaged in the work of the Lord. He stands and works with us in our labors here in CASRM. I see His hand each day in our missionary work. Thank you for your faithfulness and diligence.
Love,
President Quinn
